Question 37

How does the Holy Spirit help us?

The Holy Spirit convicts us of our sin, and he enables us to pray and to understand God’s Word.

Ephesians 6:17–18

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

Prayer

Loving God, we pray that your Holy Spirit would descend more and more into our hearts. We ask that your Spirit would convict us of our sins, and teach us to pray, to be humble, to understand more of you. We pray this for the sake of Jesus Christ, our only Savior, who in unity with the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns with the Father. Amen.

Derived and adapted from Augustine of Hippo’s prayer in Pious Breathings: Being the Meditations of St Augustine, his Treatise of the Love of God, Soliloquies and Manual, translated by Geo. Stanhope (London: J. Nunn & Co., 1818), 29–31.
