Question 45

Is baptism with water the washing away of sin itself?

No, only the blood of Christ can cleanse us from sin.

Luke 3:16

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Prayer

Our Father, we come to you and pray that, for Jesus' sake and because of his blood shed for us, you will forgive all of our sins. Thank you that we are reconciled to you through Jesus Christ. Help us to know it, and because we are sure of the finished work of Christ on our behalf, may there be no doubt in our heart about our forgiveness. We thank you that because of Jesus you have wiped away all our sins and they will never be seen again. Amen.
